Special Call for Papers - Presence Journal

Dear CAAV Members:

See below for a special call for the PRESENCE journal, with the theme for the issue being: Immersive Visualization Laboratories -- Past, Present and Future

Call and Scope: In the last three decades, numerous research organizations have set up extensive immersive visualization labs, some of which have thrived while others have not survived. However, with the advent of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) virtual reality devices, the necessity for large-scale immersive visualization labs is being scrutinized. Some immersive visualization labs have shifted away from big-scale setups due to the high maintenance costs associated with these more sophisticated systems. Nonetheless, it remains to be seen whether the immersive visualization needs can be fulfilled entirely through COTS VR devices utilized by
researchers in their own offices.

Topics: In this special issue, we aim to present exciting success stories from practitioners from various Immersive Visualization Laboratories and showcase information on their hardware setups and the software they use and/or developed. Papers can also include "not-so-successful" stories with lessons learned and plans for the future of their large-scale immersive visualization laboratory.
The scope of the special issue includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:
        • Immersive visualization laboratory success stories in research institutions and industry
        • Immersive visualization laboratory not-so-successful stories in research institutions and industry
        • Strategies for sustainability
        • Scientific and visualization workflows for large-scale labs
